Protect your Brains, Wear a Helmet!

 

     Horseback riding accounts for more head injuries  requiring hospitalization than soccer, football, hockey,  and boxing. There are elements that increase the risk factor, such as a green horse,  slippery conditions or something the rider had absolutely no control over.

      The sad thing to me though is that riders between the ages of  10—14 are the most likely to be involved in a riding injury. Last year, on December 21, a 12 year old girl was cantering down a bridle path near her home. She went to cross the street and her horse baulked at the pavement and the little girl went over his head,  landing on the pavement. Her parents had bought her a helmet but she wasn’t wearing it. She died on Christmas eve. Her name was Julia Myers.

 

All Helmets are Not Created Equal

 

     It disturbs me when I see unsafe helmets being advertised on the internet and eBay. If you are going to wear a helmet or buy one for your kid, make sure it is a good one, and that it is approved in this country. ASTM / SEI approved.      ASTM (American Society for Testing Materials) is a volunteer organization comprised of doctors, engineers and physicists who set standards for safety equipment. SEI (Safety Equipment Institute) is an independent laboratory that tests helmets to make sure they meet ASTM standards.
